Plant Description
- Leaves: Spider plants have long, arching leaves that are typically green with white or cream-colored stripes along the edges. There are also solid green and solid variegated varieties available.
- Size: Mature spider plants can reach a height of about 1 to 2 feet with a similar spread. They produce baby plantlets, or “pups,” at the end of long runners.
- Growth Habit: Spider plants are known for their cascading or arching growth habit, which makes them suitable for hanging baskets or as floor plants
Care and Maintenance
- Light: Spider plants thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. They can even adapt to some direct sunlight. Providing moderate, consistent light is ideal.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring and summer) but avoid overwatering. In the dormant season (fall and winter), allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering.
- Fertilizer: Feed your spider plant with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Dilute the fertilizer to half strength and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Accessories
- Hanging Basket: If you’re growing your spider plant as a hanging plant, choose a decorative hanging basket that complements your interior decor.
- Pot or Container: For floor or tabletop spider plants, select a decorative pot or container with proper drainage.
- Potting Mix: Use a well-draining, all-purpose potting mix suitable for indoor plants.
